Retail Sources Say Black Wii Coming May 9 (or 23)

Rumor has it we're finally getting the black Wii that has been out in Japan for nearly a year.

Last June, Nintendo launched a black version of its Wii console in Japan. The company also offered matching accessories for the console (Wiimote, Classic Controller, Classic Controller Pro and Nunchuck) but there was no word on whether or not we'd see the black Wii here in North America.

Today, reports say the black Wii is coming to the U.S. and Canada really soon. Kotaku cites sources from Target, GameStop and Future Shop who say the black bundle will arrive in May. One shopper at FYE says the black Wii bundle is already available for pre-order.

Packing a copy of Wii Sports Resort and a Wii MotionPlus add-on, sources say the bundle will go on sale May 9 in the U.S. and May 23 in Canada.

I think I'm getting a console now. That is badass looking.

While this was heavily rumored and basically confirmed by retailers already, Nintendo today officially announced that the black Wii will be hitting stateside on May 9.

Nintendo will keep the same current price tag of $199, but it plans to increase value by putting more into the box of both the black and white consoles starting next week. Every new unit will now also come packaged with Wii Sports Resort and the control-enhancing Wii MotionPlus accessory.

"Nintendo leads the way in delivering rich motion-control gaming experiences at an accessible price point," said Nintendo of America President Reggie Fils-Aime. "By including even more of our top-quality hardware and software in the basic Wii system package, we're extending that commitment to entertainment and value. Now more than ever, consumers can count on Nintendo to deliver inclusive fun and advanced motion controls at a mass-market price."

Black-colored controllers will also be available for purchase separately.
